Week of January 24, 2012
Mass will be on Wednesday and Thursday.
Academics:
The fourth graders will be writing a report on a saint and how they are instrumental to Catholic Education.
In science we will learn about elements and how they are organized. We will also do a lab to identify metal and the properties of metal.
Spelling we will start lesson 20. The test will be on Thursday.
In Language we will start learning about adjectives and using adjectives after linking verbs.
In math we will be dividing three digit numbers.
In social studies we will start Chapter 8.
The reading story we will be reading is Felita.
Next week is Catholic Schools week.
Monday-Mismatch day
Tuesday-Play/Planetarium Field Trip. Please bring lunch, dress nice and be at school by 8:00 a.m.
Wednesday-
Thursday-Lunch with special person/grandparent/spelling bee and donation of hair to Pantene's beautiful length.

Events:
Wednesday and Thursday-Mass at 8:30 a.m.
Friday-Pajama Day. May wear appropriate pajamas in school this day. Movie day in the afternoon
Friday is also the end of the quarter.
Religion-We will be discussing Human Rights. We will have a test on Chapter 8 on Friday.
Science-We will be learning how to find volume of an object using a graduated cylinder. We will look at densities of different liquids as well.
Spelling-We will review the ould and ough words again. The words are tough and two weeks to review is important. We will also have a spelling bee in class and the top 3 will advance to the all school spelling bee which will be held during Catholic Schools week.
Language-We will work with the contraction not and we will be working with quotation marks in our writing.
Math-We will be working with one and two digit quotients. Keep practicing math facts for adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing. It is important to get the skills mastered.
Social Studies we will continue learning about the Underground Railroad.
A test on Chapter 7 will be on January 16th.
In reading we will read the story Sarah, Plain and Tall which is in our reading book. We will be defining words, working with a concept map, putting items in order and comprehension skills will be reviewed this week.
Just a reminder to all. Our school day starts at 8:05. Children must be in the classroom by the 2nd bell or they are marked tardy.

Wednesday and Thursday-Mass at 8:30 a.m.
Thursday evening is the Christmas Concert. Dress appropriately. Attendance is mandated.
Academics:
This week in religion we will be focusing on the season of Ordinary Time. On Friday the 4th graders will receive readings as we have the Mass on December 22nd.
Science we will be working with Chapter nine on matter.
Spelling will be lesson 14- Words will have an au pattern.
In languages we will work on prefixes and subject verb agreement.
In math we will work on problem solving all week. Continue working on basic math facts as this is an area I see the children making mistakes in.
Social studies test will be on Tuesday pertaining to Chapter 5.
In reading we will start the book Mr. Popper's Penguins.

Math-We continue working on multiplication. We will work with multiplying 3 digit numbers. We will also do some problem solving as well. Keep practicing math facts daily.
In Social Studies we will be finishing up the chapter on the American Revolution.
Reading-Story will be A Little Excitement. We will work on vocabulary, Sequence of events, summarizing, setting and characters.

We had a great time last week at the Tomashek Farm. We may have some future farmers in the 4th grade class!

Events:
All Week Adventures in Dairyland
Wednesday and Thursday-Mass at 8:30
Thursday-Presentation of Flag (after Mass in the Gym)
Friday-Field Trip to Tomashek Farm (Dress in warm clothes and old shoes/boots)
Map testing on Monday, Thursday and Friday @ 1:30 p.m.
Religion-This week I will be teaching the children the Protecting God Children Program. Children will be taught the Four Steps for creating a Safe and Sacred Place, How to protect themselves against predators and what to do. We will finish up next week by creating a special symbol to show that we are special living people who need to be respected. Any questions on the topic please call me at school.
In science we will be getting involved learn about the solar system and the planets.
PROJECT: Children will be creating a model of the Planets. This project can be made out of any items. Dioramas, drawings, can be used. The project will be due on November 18, 2011. Have fun with this!
A test on lesson 2 Chapter 8 will be on Tuesday.
In spelling children will work on lesson 10 words. Plurals of final y words. Please review the steps. Test will be on Thursday, November 10, 2011.
In language we will be starting a unit on verbs.
Math-Keep working on Math facts. I would like all multiplication facts known by Christmas up to the 12's. Please practice daily. We will also be working on multiplying 4 digit numbers and learning patterns in multiplication.
In social studies we will have the Adventures in Dairyland program for the next 2 weeks.
Reading we will read Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters. Vocabulary will include the words grieve, commotion, descended, destination, preparation, considerate, and praise. We will work on comprehension and writing an explanation/comparing and contrasting the 2 daughters during the week.
As mentioned above, we will start Map Testing. Children are encouraged to do their best on this test. Rest is key as well as attendance on testing days.

Academics:
Religion-We are working on chapter 4. We will learn about how we form our conscience and how to examine our conscience. Test will be on Thursday, October 20, 2011.
In Science we will finish up lesson 1 in chapter 8. We will write a fictional story about if sunlight could not reach the earth. A quiz on Chapter 8 lesson one will be on Wednesday.
In spelling we will work on ie and ei words. Remember the rule i before e except after c or in words that sound like neighbor and weigh.
In Language we will work on singular and plural possessive nouns.
Math we will finish chapter 2 and have a test on Tuesday.
In Social Studies we will finish up learning about the First People with a quick quiz on Tuesday (Chapter 3).
In reading we will continue reading Misty's Twilight.

A look ahead!
Halloween Party will be on Wednesday, Oct. 26. The City Wide Halloween Party will be after school on this day as well. Children must attend with a parent/guardian. Please send me a note to let me know if your child will stay for this event.

November 1st, All Saints Day. The 4th graders will be leading the Mass and all have a reading to do during the Mass. Please practice.

Academics:
In Religion we will have a test on Chapter 3 on Wednesday. We will start chapter 4 on Thursday to learn that God calls us to be close to him. We will learn and understand what it means to have a conscience and understand that a conscience works three ways.
In Science we will have a Chapter 5 test on Tuesday. This will include all 4 lessons. On Wednesday, we will begin studying the solar system.
Spelling words will be on Contractions.
In language we will learn and used the correct form of Singular and Plural nouns.
In Math we will work on estimating, add/subtract money and do some problem solving.
In social studies we will have a Social studies test on Chapter 2 on Tuesday.
We will begin focusing on Wisconsin on Wednesday learning about the First People.
We continue to read Misty's Twilight and journaling.
Events:
Tuesday-October Mass at 2:00 p.m.
Book it program-Starting Monday, October 10th the children who would like to enter the book it program must read an extra 15 minutes a night. This will include weekends as well. Children will log what was read, and parents will sign that the reading was done. Children will read until November 10th to earn a book it certificate to Pizza Hut.

Monday, October 3, 2011-Open House from 4:30-6:15. Home and School meeting to follow open house.
Tuesday, October 4, 2011-Pet Blessing in the parking lot at 8:30 a.m. Live pets on leashes or in pet taxi can be brought to the parking lot. Pets must go home after the blessing. (If weather is bad, children can bring a picture of their pet and the blessing will be in the gym.
Friday, October 7, 2011- Rosary at 8:30 a.m.
Public Library in the morning. Please bring library card.
In religion we will review the Good Samaritan story. We than will develop skits using real life situation today and modernize the Good Samaritan Story.
In reading we will start the book Misty Twilight. The children will be journaling the meaning of each chapter title. This process will take us about 3 Religion-We will be reading the Good Samaritan story and creating modernized skits to reflect this story. We will learn that we are called to value and respect all people.
Science-We will be learning how glaciers shape the land. We will have a quiz on lesson 3 chapter 5 on Wednesday.
Spelling-The words contain the oi pattern
In language we will be writing back to our pen pals. We will also start a unit on nouns.
In math we will be finishing up chapter 1. Children will be expect to write numbers in standard and expanded form, place value to the hundred-million, rounding, and making change. The test will be on Wednesday.
In social studies we will work on climate regions.

Academics:
This week in Religion we will start chapter three. We will study free will and temptation. We will make a good service announcement about making good choices. We are also working with the Venture magazine which gives the readings/understanding for Sunday, October 2nd Mass.
Please sign up for the Family Mass and participate which is on October 2nd, 2011.
Just a reminder to all, our Catholic Faith reminds us to celebrate the Eucharist often. Please attend Mass each week with your children/family.

In language we will work on combining sentences and using context clues. We will begin learning how to write a personal narrative.

Reminders: Prayer service on Friday, September 23rd
Academics:
In religion we will learn about Jesus mission and how he shared his mission with his disciples. We will begin the Venture Magazine on Friday which will speak about the readings for the week. All children should be attending Mass on Sunday/Saturday. In the gathering space there is a tree. Children when attending Mass on Sat or Sunday may pin an apple on the tree. Let's fill the tree!
In science we will learn about how the crust of the earth moves, what causes earthquakes and how scientist study earthquakes.
Spelling we will be working on less and ful words.
Computer we are working on keyboarding.
In language we will continue working on subjects and predicates.
In math we will be recognizing numbers at the half way point and working on making change. Keep working on place value and multiplication facts.
In social studies we will be learning about different types of resources. We will have a test on Chapter 1 in Social studies on Friday. Review pages 6-33.
Reading we will work on the story Just a Dream. We will work on vocabulary, sequence of events, story comprehension and using Information Resources.
