December 3rd, 2012

This week we will be working on Soft Skills or the Classroom routine.  When children come to school they first must hang up their coats, come in the room and put their homework in the work in baskets.  Then they need to do their milk count and finally work on their handwriting or beginning of the day activity.  Too many of the students are not following this routine so I ask you to gently remind them in the morning what their job is when they come to school.

Another soft skill children need to work on is basic math facts.  Many children are counting on their fingers or using the calendar to calculate answers.  My expectation is that facts must be memorized.  Each day I ask you to set aside an extra 10 minutes to practice facts addition and subtraction.  I do give a time test and the goal is to get 100 problems finish in 2 minutes.  Right now the average is 40 problems in 5 minutes.  Children have some work in this area.

In writing the soft skills include remembering to write in complete sentences and proofing what it written.  Capital letters and punctuation are often forgotten.  Children need to use the words from a question to formulate the answer in a statement.

Children also need to remember to put their name on their homework.  I will be deducting points from now on if names are not on the paper.  It is just something that is expected now.

We will be working on Reconciliation in religion.  Don’t forget second grade parents/children there is a meeting this Wednesday, December 5th at 6:00 in the Cafeteria.

In Social studies we will be learning about the Cherokee and the Trail of Tears.

In science we will be learning about the earth’s atmosphere

We continue to work on r controlled vowels we will have a test on Thursday.  I also am giving dictation sentences usually on Wednesday.

We continue to work on adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers in math.  I am also working on comparing data using tally marks in story problems this week.

Spelling we have al words.  We will also work with compound words in language.

On Wednesday we will be making Poppers in Reading Class!
